Oct. 1, 2005. There have been a great many reports in the news recently about a flu virus that has the ability to infect dogs. The virus hit the news in a big way when an article was published by the journal, Science, reporting that the virus had apparently made the jump from horses to dogs, an unusual occurrence of great interest to scientists. Of course, a disease that might infect dogs is of even greater interest to dog owners. There has been a lot of publicity and concern, so we thought we should see what we could find to help people deal with this disease in a rational way.
The lead author of the Science article was Dr. Cynda Crawford, a veterinary researcher at the University of Florida. Dr. Crawford participated in a CDC media briefing on September 26, 2005. The transcript from that briefing quotes Dr. Crawford saying, "I think common sense is a good term to use in that dog owners who have a dog with a respiratory infection or that has just recovered from a respiratory infection should probably keep the dog at home until a couple of weeks have elapsed, number one, for that dog to recover fully, and number two, in case that dog has an infectious disease, whether it's flu or not, that could be communicable to other dogs that it is around."
Click here to read the excerpts we took from the CDC briefing, or, since we are not veterinarians, you may want to click here for the full transcript and decide for yourself what is important.
